Harney Partners, a leading restructuring advisory firm with national reach, today announced that the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association (TMA) has named James E. Harney the recipient of its 2018 Turnaround Legend Award.
The lifetime achievement award honors leaders whose entire careers have increased the stature and respect of the turnaround industry. Nominated by fellow professionals, winners are selected based on a rigorous peer-review process that is designed to portray the value TMA members provide to the business community and global economy.
In accepting the award, Harney said, “I feel very fortunate to be able to work in a service profession that has the ability to change lives for the better. For me, this has always been about people. Day in and day out we are given the sacred trust of our clients, their employees and other stakeholders. Our challenge is to live up to that trust in an honest and ethical way, while executing complex solutions. Integrity is at the core of our practice.”

Restructuring Consultant
Harney founded the restructuring consulting firm that bears his name in Chicago in 1991 after a successful 18-year banking career. Harney Partners now blankets the middle of the U.S. with additional offices in Madison, Austin, Dallas and Houston. Harney Partners is a leader in crisis management and turnaround advisory services to privately held middle-market companies at any stage of their life cycle. Harney’s expertise encompasses mergers and acquisitions, private placements and the sale of highly leveraged troubled companies, both in an out of bankruptcy proceedings.
Prior to starting his own consultancy, Harney was executive vice president of Glenfeld Capital Corporation, where he started the Midwest office that closed transactions with major venture capital funds and partnered with prominent commercial lenders. Before that, he was vice president of business development for the First National Bank of Chicago and vice president and portfolio manager for Irving Trust Company. His early financial career included credit analyst positions at Rosenthal & Rosenthal and CIT Corporation. Harney holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Iona College. He is a Certified Turnaround Professional and a member of the Turnaround Management Association; has served on the boards of directors for numerous privately held companies; and is a regular speaker on the turnaround industry, banking and finance nationwide.
